The 24-Hour Sarah Parvin Annual Memorial Soccerfest is the premier event for the Sarah Parvin Foundation. It began with an idea, sparked by the memory of an energetic and courageous young soccer player. Sarah Parvin played for the Quakertown Soccer Club. She played with her long, wavy hair blowing behind her, and she played with no hair at all. She was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Small Cell Ovarian Cancer with Hypercalcemia. She succumbed to the disease shortly after her twelfth birthday. She was remembered as having an unfailing spirit, and an infectious smile. "There must be something that we can do."....
"Let's play soccer for 24 hours, and raise money to combat this devastating disease", and so we formed a partnership with the Quakertown Soccer Club. They are an amazing group of selfless people, who are willing to give generously of their time and talents. That first year, we started with approximately 80 teams signed up to participate in this new-fangled idea. Games of soccer were played around the clock, people volunteered their time to feed the masses and give families a great memory to take with them. Well, the idea caught on! A great time was had by all, and coaches, teams, and families vowed to return the following year! And so they did, and they kept on coming. The team count rose to over 200 teams each year. This is a very different concept than a traditional soccer tournament. There are no established winners in these games. There is only sportsmanship, camaraderie, and the joy of playing the game. Everyone's a winner who comes to the event and enjoys all of the activities that are offered. Food, music, entertainment, vendor goods, and soccer games abound. There is something for everyone and the atmosphere is one of joy and hope.
In the past nine years, the Sarah Parvin Foundation, in partnership with the Quakertown Soccer Club, has raised over $350,000 that has gone directly into cancer research through Jefferson University Hospital, support for AstraZeneca Hope Lodge, and programs to help offset the costs for families dealing with cancer.. ...Show Less

GADABOUT FILM FESTIVAL
Flemington DIY, 90 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822 (map)
Date: 7/21/17 Time: 7-10pm    WEBSITE
The annual Gadabout Film Festival is an internationally-touring short film program with a unique style and energy. A Gadabout screening is an experience Show More...accessible to everyone, from film aficionados to film novices, with a selection of high-quality, well-paced films diverse in genre, medium, and content. The program will include documentaries, animations, narratives, and just plain fun films. You'll leave inspired and curious, having laughed, pondered, and possibly teared up.
Since its beginning, in 2002, The Gadabout had the idea of creating a film festival that operates more like a DIY punk band, an alternative to the money-focused, commercial film festivals. With a van, projector, screen, and speakers, the founders took a program of independent shorts films out on the road, screening in basements, art houses, music venues, collective spaces, warehouses, parking lots, and more. Every year since, the festival has grown and built connections globally, while continuing to create engaging and entertaining film programs to share with new audiences.
"We have been fortunate enough to receive and share incredible short films from all around the world, screening them in 45 states, 15 different countries and over 100 cities during the past 14 years. Over that time we've seen filmmaking and the way in which we watch films change and progress. We have gone from receiving VHS submissions in the mail to transferring digital files from filmmakers online that live thousands of miles away. From a time when YouTube didn't exist to a world where people can watch anything they want at the click of a button. But the essence of the Gadabout hasn't changed. Things have become even more exciting, especially now that filmmaking has become more accessible. We want to show that film making can be fun, and amazing content can come out of low-to-no budgets."

The show will feature recent small paintings done in oil, acrylics and watercolor mostly of very local scenes. The artist will be on hand to greet visitors, friends and patrons on Sunday, July 2 from 5 to 8pm. Bucks is open daily from 6am to pm.
Mann generally works from life in an impressionistic/realistic style. The artist says "I always prefer to work plein air since that makes it easier to catch the feeling and life of a place. Painting outdoors is also a great way to meet people. It is especially fun to share my work with children and budding artists." Most of his art is done near his Stockton home and he usually goes by bicycle. But when traveling, his art supplies always go with.
The artist studied at the Art Students League in New York City, mostly under a great illustrator- Steven R. (Joe) Kidd. His work is always colorful and brimming with life and action. He often catches people in his pictures as they pass through the scene. During much of July, Mann plans to be painting very near the show so he can be easily available to meet interested people.
You can find Mann's work on the Internet by searching Mike Mann's Art. He can be contacted at (609)439-9978.

A new exhibit at Pearl S. Buck International shares the stories of Jewish communities in China over millennia. These stories intrigued Pearl S. Buck and Show More...her husband Richard Walsh so much that each explored them in their published works. Ms. Buck wrote the novel "Peony" and the play "Flight into China" on the subject. Mr. Walsh included scholarly articles about the topic in his publication, "Asia" magazine.
Jews settled in China as tradespeople on the silk road. They had strong communities and became part of society. One of the largest communities was in K'aifeng. A stele (stone tablet) commemorates the construction of a synagogue there in 1163, but by the 1850s there were only remnants of the building standing and most families had assimilated.
Part of the exhibit at Pearl S. Buck International is a retelling, through words and photos, of one Jewish family's flight from Nazi Germany into China. Packed in the luggage was a copy of "The Good Earth" which descendants presume was carried so far in order to become part of a lending library established during their stay in China.

See where colonial career paths could take you at Pottsgrove Manor as we present our program, "Jack of All Trades," on Saturday, July 22nd, 2017, from Show More...11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Do you have what it takes to be a "Jack of All Trades" at Pottsgrove Manor? There will be cooking in our reproduction 18th century kitchen where you can learn the skills needed to make a Georgian meal in a hearth fireplace. Weavers will be working on tape looms and turning wool into yarn and thread. Our mason, or brick/stone layer, will be illustrating the steps in stone carving by hand. Discover what a seamstress will be piecing together to create and hand-sew colonial garments. Explore what a book binder, colonial shoe maker, and broom maker are showcasing, teaching about their craft, and showing off their wares. Hands-on activities allow everyone to experience the noises, sights, and smells of the different 18th century careers and skills that crafted both everyday and luxury items. Colonial ironmaster John Potts' 1752 manor house will be open for tours during the day. Visitors will also be able to shop at the manor's museum shop for colonial games, books, and unique gifts. Trades were a necessary part of colonial life as friends and neighbors worked to sell and share their wares and services. Visit Pottsgrove Manor as we invite you to come see what's being made!
This program welcomes all ages; suggested donation $2 per person for the event. The event will be held rain or shine!
Pottsgrove Manor is located at 100 West King Street near the intersection of King Street and Route 100, just off Route 422 near the Carousel at Pottsgrove and Manatawny Green Miniature Golf Course, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
